Supporting your child at school

You are your child's first teacher and you play a crucial role in helping your child to learn.

Children achieve more when parents and schools work together

Below are some examples of things you can do to help your child to achieve their full potential during their time at school

 

Make sure your child arrives to school on time

Make sure your child attends regularly

Make sure your child understands the importance of good attendance and punctuality – prevent them from wanting to truant

Phone on the first day of absence and provide a note of explanation for absence

Try to arrange appointments and outings after school hours, at weekends or during school holidays

Make every effort not to take your child on holiday during term-time

Attend Open Evenings to discuss your child’s progress

Ensure your child wears correct school uniform every day

Support the school’s policies – available from the school

Support your child with homework and complete homework diaries

Make the school aware of any concerns or problems that might affect my/our child’s work and/or behaviour

Work with the school in matters of behaviour and discipline

Encourage your child to take care of other people, buildings, equipment and personal possessions

Where possible, attend school events, assemblies and sports days

Follow school complaints procedures

Encourage your child to take part in the full life of the school
