Applying to start secondary school

As soon as your child starts their final year of primary school (Year 6) you will need to apply for secondary school.

Preparing for the secondary transfer process in your child’s year five will give you extra time to think over all your options, visit the secondary schools you are considering so you can talk to the teachers and make the necessary arrangements by the required deadlines.

tick.gif In September your child’s primary school will give you a copy of the Transfer from Primary to Secondary School Brochure or you can download it from www.croydon.gov.uk.

tick.gif Read the brochure carefully as it contains all the information you need to apply.

tick.gif Find out about the schools; collect their prospectuses, visit their websites and read their Ofsted reports or school profiles online at http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk

tick.gif It is very important that you also visit the schools on their open evenings or open days - the dates and times will be available from August/September.

tick.gif  Study the school’s admissions criteria published in the brochure or available online at www.croydon.gov.uk

This explains how they decide which pupils will be offered places if they receive more applications than they have places available, these vary from school to school. If you can’t meet the criteria then you’re not likely to get a place.

tick.gif  Complete either the local authority paper application form OR an online application at www.eadmissions.org.uk

tick.gif  List the schools in the order you prefer them.

tick.gif If you are applying for a school outside the borough of Croydon you must include this school on your Croydon application form.  See Neighbouring Local Authorities for further details.

tick.gif  Complete and return supplementary forms for all of the schools that require them, available from www.croydon.gov.uk

tick.gif  Deadlines for supplementary forms and the local authority application form may be different.

tick.gif  Ensure that your application forms are handed in by the deadlines!

tick.gif  You will be advised of the outcome of your application in the following March.  For more information click here

Remember…

tick.gif You must still apply even if you already have another child attending your preferred school.

tick.gif You should apply for at least four schools, six if you can, to improve your chances of getting an offer at one you prefer.

tick.gif You should also apply for a school in which you are likely to qualify for a place, even if it is not your first or second choice.

tick.gif Putting the same school more than once will not raise your chances of being allocated that school.

tick.gif Putting only one school will seriously limit your child’s chances of being allocated a school.

tick.gif Applications for twins, triplets and other multiple births must be made separately and there is no guarantee that the children will be offered the same school.
